1. Reference specification for internal loss value; Lost budget: With the increased use of mass storage devices, it is easier to enjoy high-resolution images and videos on consumer products such as PCs, tablets, smartphones, etc. As a result, the amount of information that needs to be processed on these devices increases dramatically, and the signal speeds in the devices are getting faster and faster. However, the higher the speed at which the signal is transmitted, the greater the transmission loss such as conductor loss and dielectric loss that occur in the transmission path, making the transmission of the signal more difficult. Therefore, according to the transmission standard, there is a reference specification of the internal loss value called the loss budget. For example, in the case of the USB4 (* 1) specification Ver.1.0 [Thunderbolt 4 (* 2)], which is a 20Gbps (10GHz)/Lane high-speed transmission, the loss budget for Device A, Cable, and Device B is specified at-7.5 dB, as shown in the figure below.

2. USB4 typical internal connection method (20Gbps (10GHz)/Lane): If high-speed signals can be transmitted over long distances on the PCB board within a loss budget of-7.5 dB, designers will have greater flexibility when designing their PCB board. (1) High-speed signals such as USB4 can be transmitted using low transmission loss boards when the transmission distance reaches a certain amount. However, the longer the transmission distance, the greater the loss in the transmission path, and the more difficult it is to transmit the signal within the loss budget. Therefore, if the transmission path is long, it is necessary to take measures to suppress losses generated in the transmission path. Although the transmission distance can be extended by using ultra-low transmission loss boards, this can lead to a significant increase in the cost of mass production of the product. Other measures to extend the required transmission distance while suppressing losses may be: (2) using a jumper transmission path suitable for high-speed transmissions, or (3) using a Retimer IC to correct the attenuated signal waveform and reproduce the original waveform.

3. Transmission comparison test results of ultra-thin coaxial bundle jumper connected to low transmission loss board: Comparison of transmission loss--CABLINE ®-VS II ultra-thin coaxial bundle jumper Low transmission loss board 3.1. Using ultra-thin coaxial bundle jumper transmission: 2 inches, 4 inches, 8 inches, 10 inches 3.2. Using low loss board transmission: 2 inches, 4 inches

According to the above actual measurement results, a larger transmission length with a loss of-7.5 dB per transmission path is calculated (for reference). At any transmission speed, the transmission distance of CABLINE ®-VS II ultra-thin coaxial bundle jumper is about 2 to 3 times the transmission distance of using low transmission loss board.
