Today's drivers are demanding smart car connectivity to an unprecedented level. This demand has prompted industry leaders to invest heavily in Internet of Things (IoT) technology to advance smart car connectivity at an alarming rate. In fact, Business Insider estimates that the automotive industry will ship 94 million connected vehicles in 2021. This figure represents 82% of the industry as a whole and speaks volumes about the demand of today's drivers for this rapidly evolving technology. Currently, there are two ways to connect smart cars. Embedded cars utilize built-in radios and antennas to connect to local cellular networks, while tethered vehicles use wirelessly connected devices, typically cellphones, to provide data connectivity. This is achieved via a Bluetooth ® or USB cable. In addition to data connectivity, the car also has GPS navigation and emergency services, satellite radio (Sirius), hands-free calling, sensors and data collection, and keyless entry and start. Some of these systems, such as tire pressure monitoring, can utilize embedded or board-level antennas. Others, such as emergency services or data-intensive systems such as navigation or satellite radio, require an external, dedicated antenna. Despite these highly diverse requirements, I-PEX connectors are still able to provide robust and diverse products to meet the critical RF interconnection needs of all these systems, thanks to I-PEX's patented i-Fit ® MHF ® extremely fine coaxial connection RF connector series. MHF series connectors provide automotive OEM module manufacturers with reliable and appropriate solutions to meet their RF needs. The frequency range is from DC to 15ghz (MHF ® 5L), and most of the frequencies used in automobiles are from DC to 6ghz, which can be achieved by using MHF I series products. In addition to plate fitting heights of up to 2.5 mm (1.8 mm OD wire) to 3 mm (2.0 mm OD wire), MHF ® I connectors also provide flexibility in choosing the right cable for your application. Repeatability and consistency are key to ensuring equipment operation. The MHF series ranges from DC-3 GHz with a standing wave ratio max of 1.3 and from 3-6 GHz with a standing wave ratio max of 1.5. For improved durability, I-PEX offers a 4-pad layout in addition to a 3-pad configuration.

The engineers at I-PEX Connectors have designed solutions for automotive applications to handle special issues that fixed RF systems do not encounter, particularly shock and vibration. While the car is in motion, mechanical harmonics are created due to the rough roads, and the connectors may disconnect over time. To solve these problems, I-PEX Connectors has designed some products, such as the MHF ® I LK connector, which was introduced in 2017. This innovative solution will be suitable for the following cable sizes (0.81 mm OD, 1.13 mm OD, 1.32 mm OD, 1.37 mm OD and 1.80 mm OD) to accommodate various insertion loss and cable length needs. Furthermore, the initial pull-out force of 20 N min is better than the standard MHF I series connector of 5 N min.
