In the fiber optic communication system, single-mode fiber optic transceiver and multi-mode fiber optic transceiver are two different devices, and their working principles and characteristics are different. In order to distinguish between single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic transceivers, they can be distinguished from the following aspects:

Fiber Type: Single-mode fiber transceivers and multi-mode fiber transceivers are used for transmission of single-mode fiber and multi-mode fiber respectively, so they can be distinguished according to the type of fiber used.

Operating Wavelength: Single-mode fiber optic transceivers and multi-mode fiber optic transceivers operate at different wavelengths. Single-mode fiber optic transceivers generally work at 1310 nm or 1550 nm wavelength, while multi-mode fiber optic transceivers generally work at 850 nm or 1310 nm wavelength.

Fiber Optic Interface Type: Single-mode fiber optic transceivers and multi-mode fiber optic transceivers also have different types of fiber optic interfaces. Single-mode fiber optic transceiver's fiber optic interface generally adopts FC/PC, SC/PC, LC/PC and other types, while multi-mode fiber optic transceiver's fiber optic interface generally adopts ST, SC, LC and other types.

Transmit power and receive sensitivity: The transmit power and receive sensitivity of single-mode fiber optic transceivers and multimode fiber optic transceivers are also different. Single-mode fiber optic transceivers generally have higher transmit power and lower receive sensitivity, which is suitable for long distance transmission; while multi-mode fiber optic transceivers have lower transmit power and higher receive sensitivity, which is suitable for short distance transmission.

In short, when choosing a fiber optic transceiver, it is necessary to consider and select based on specific fiber type, operating wavelength, fiber interface type, transmit power and receive sensitivity and other factors.
